Australian Catholic Bishops Conference President
ACAN has been endorsed by the Most Rev Mark Coleridge, Archbishop of Brisbane, President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference .
In a mesÂsage to NetÂwork parÂticÂiÂpants, the ArchÂbishÂop Coleridge said:
“The forÂmaÂtion of the AusÂtralian Catholic AntiÂslavÂery NetÂwork (ACAN) is a major achieveÂment withÂin the Church in AusÂtralia and far beyond. ACAN has done much in a short time, workÂing to ensure a high levÂel of coopÂerÂaÂtion and coorÂdiÂnaÂtion among AusÂtralian Catholic entiÂties in dioÂceÂses, as well as eduÂcaÂtion, health and aged care, welÂfare, finance and investÂment in response to the ModÂern SlavÂery Act.
Catholic entiÂties parÂticÂiÂpatÂing in ACAN are strongÂly posiÂtioned to respond effecÂtiveÂly to the statuÂtoÂry requireÂments in the ModÂern SlavÂery Act with a comÂpreÂhenÂsive risk manÂageÂment proÂgram. The ModÂern SlavÂery StateÂments of Catholic entiÂties will also form a comÂpendiÂum of Catholic prinÂciÂples and action for the advanceÂment of human digÂniÂty and the comÂmon good.
AusÂtralia can be a leadÂing force in the Catholic world in seekÂing to eradÂiÂcate modÂern slavÂery, human trafÂfickÂing and forced labour. That is the purÂpose of the SusÂtainÂable DevelÂopÂment Goal (SDG) 8.7, which was inspired by Pope Francis.”
