Kinder machen
Ein Film von Barbara Burger

Schweiz 2017, 82 min

Einfach so.

Wann? Ich will?

Was also wagte diese Werbung zu behaupten?

Note de l’auteur

make children
A film by Barbara Burger
Switzerland 2017, 82 min

Having children, the supposedly “most natural thing in the world” is not always the easiest thing to do. Be it due to biological deficits of the parents or an elaborate career or life planning. The desire for offspring nowadays moves between legitimate need, individual basic instinct, social pressure and lifestyle decision. The film looks over the shoulder and into the test tube with a great deal of expertise and impressive images of reproductive medicine and industry. The aim is neither to praise reproductive medicine nor to stigmatize it. Nevertheless, the social, political and above all ethical implications are palpable at every moment.

A science fiction of the present.

Author’s note
And suddenly I had children; healthy and cheerful. Just like that.
It was different for people close to me.

In a magazine I stumbled across an advertisement in a fertility clinic. The clinic advertised “Social Freezing”. The photo suggests: The woman is independent, healthy, the woman enjoys education and still has a lot to do in terms of business. The motto: I have my child when I want. When? I want?

Through the experience with my girlfriends I was aware that unwanted childlessness is a deeply incisive fact that brings with it a lot of grief and anger and requires discussion. As before, I can only guess how helpless an unfulfilled desire for children makes you.
So what did this advertisement dare to claim?
Every woman can have a child and also determine the ideal time?
And beyond that: Have you discovered the solution, the real self-determination of the woman?

Advertising made me wonder and so my journey into the world of reproductive medicine began.

I went to see a doctor to find out what was wrong with “social freezing”, the freezing and storage of eggs. I quickly realized that a child can only develop after a “social freezing” treatment by means of artificial insemination. The doctors took me to the laboratories to see the embryologists. There I witnessed how eggs are fertilised with sperm. I found it extremely fascinating that people might have been conceived before my very eyes.
In the laboratory everything was clinically pure, full of apparatuses and aids. A constant rustle and roar of ventilation in the room. Nothing of love, physicality, no romance. And yet there were people who, with devotion and full concentration, brought human germ cells together, wanted to fulfil a desire to have children. At the same time, ethical questions arose. How much manual work on human germ cells, on embryos is okay? Where are borders — yours, mine, ours — crossed?

From these experiences the idea for “making children” became concrete.
I wanted to make a film from the perspective of those who try to fulfil the desire to have children. What drives them? I wanted to open the laboratory doors for everyone to experience the steps of artificial insemination. Equally important was the aspect of science and research. The urge of us humans for new insights allows us to cross borders again and again. Where are they grown in the sensitive field of reproductive medicine? Who protects them?

It is my intention to make the complexity of reproductive medicine tangible by “making children”. “Making children” is intended to trigger a discussion about our current approach to reproductive medicine.
