Reli­gions against human traf­fick­ing: When we con­sid­er what is hap­pen­ing in our world, we real­ize that very often reli­gions are invoked to enslave, to reject the oth­er. There­fore, in the Asso­ci­a­tion of the Spir­i­tu­al Appeal of Gene­va, we said that we could not and that we should not invoke a reli­gion or phi­los­o­phy to enslave the oth­er. And yet, this is some­times the case. And yet, our reli­gious tra­di­tions, what­ev­er they may be, can be invoked to refuse this human traf­fick­ing, and refuse it from their fun­da­men­tal prin­ci­ples. The reli­gions of the East and the Far East advo­cate detach­ment. One must detach one­self from the world, one must detach one­self from envy, one must detach one­self from desires. So, how can we to advo­cate detach­ment and at the same time use the oth­ers, who­ev­er they are, for any­thing? There is a deep con­tra­dic­tion between this refusal of greed, this invi­ta­tion to detach­ment and human traf­fick­ing. In our monothe­is­tic tra­di­tions, there is also a pro­found oppo­si­tion with human traf­fick­ing. Islam says so in the Koran, Judaism and Chris­tian­i­ty say it in the Bible. Where it is writ­ten in the first chap­ter of Gen­e­sis that God cre­at­ed the human male and female. He cre­at­ed them. God cre­at­ed ‘ha-Adam’, the human, not Adam, as a male being. Male and female, he cre­at­ed THEM. And our tra­di­tion says: Well! In the begin­ning, God had some­how bond­ed the man and the woman togeth­er. Some say back to back, oth­ers say side by side. There­fore, in the sec­ond chap­ter, says the same com­men­ta­tor, God sep­a­rat­ed the male part, Adam, and the female part, Eve. And when Adam looks at Eve, as he sud­den­ly finds him­self he finds him­self face to face and no longer back to back or side by side, he says: ‘But she, she is “etseme atsamai’’, which is usu­al­ly trans­lat­ed by ‘bone of my bones’, but in fact ‘sub­stance of my sub­stance’.  What does this mean? This means that there is a per­fect iden­ti­ty between the man and the woman. And that there­fore there can’t be one that is supe­ri­or to the oth­er, that takes pos­ses­sion of the oth­er. As there can be no at the human lev­el one that takes pos­ses­sion of the oth­er, who­ev­er he is. God cre­at­ed the Adam, ‘ha-Adam’, and not Adam alone. We are all says our rab­binic tra­di­tion, we are all descen­dants of the same human unit, of the same human stock. It is the text that says so. We know that, in the evo­lu­tion of human­i­ty, in the evo­lu­tion of cre­ation, it has not been total­ly so. But it’s the idea that counts. The idea is that human­i­ty is one and only. So, cer­tain­ly, some of them have a lit­tle yel­low skin, oth­ers a lit­tle red, oth­ers a lit­tle black, some a lit­tle white. But, beyond this appear­ance, we are all iden­ti­cal to each oth­er. Our body works exact­ly the same way. Our mind illu­mi­nates our brain in the same way. We are dif­fer­ent because we are born in a dif­fer­ent geo­graph­i­cal, social, cul­tur­al, reli­gious con­text. But beyond this par­tic­u­lar­i­ty, we are all sub­stance of the same sub­stance. So it is unthink­able, reli­gious­ly speak­ing, if you look at our texts, it is unthink­able to be able to be in favor of human traf­fick­ing. It is impos­si­ble to invoke our reli­gions, as we say in the Gene­va Spir­i­tu­al Appeal, it is impos­si­ble to invoke them to take pos­ses­sion of the oth­er and make it what we want it to be, that is, to degrade him from his human­i­ty to make him an object. We are all human beings with a divine reflec­tion, with a light in us. And it is this divine reflec­tion and light that is in us that we must rec­og­nize in the oth­er. And when it is so, our world will cer­tain­ly be brighter than it is now. Reli­gions must be invoked to oppose all human traf­fick­ing. This is their mes­sage. Or rather, this must be their mes­sage. Les reli­gions con­tre le traf­ic d’êtres humains : Quand on con­sid­ère ce qui se passe dans notre monde, nous nous apercevons que très sou­vent, les reli­gions sont invo­quées pour asservir, rejeter l’autre. C’est pourquoi, dans l’Association de l’Appel Spir­ituel de Genève, nous avons dit que nous ne pou­vions pas et que nous ne devions pas invo­quer une reli­gion ou une philoso­phie pour asservir l’autre. Et pour­tant, tel est par­fois le cas. Et pour­tant, nos tra­di­tions religieuses, quelles qu’elles soient, peu­vent être invo­quées pour refuser ce traf­ic d’êtres humains, et le refuser à par­tir de leurs principes fon­da­men­taux. Les reli­gions d’Orient et d’Extrême-Orient prô­nent le détache­ment. Il faut se détach­er du monde, il faut se détach­er des envies, il faut se détach­er des désirs. Donc, com­ment peut-on prôn­er le détache­ment et en même temps, utilis­er les autres, quels qu’ils soient, pour quoi que ce soit ? Il y a une pro­fonde con­tra­dic­tion entre ce refus de l’avidité, cette invi­ta­tion au détache­ment et le traf­ic d’êtres humains. Dans nos tra­di­tions monothéistes, il y a égale­ment une pro­fonde oppo­si­tion avec le traf­ic d’êtres humains. L’Islam le dit dans le Coran, le judaïsme et le chris­tian­isme le dis­ent dans la Bible. Où il est écrit dans le pre­mier chapitre de la Genèse que Dieu créa l’humain mâle et femelle. Il les créa. Dieu créa “ha-Adam”, l’humain, et non pas Adam, comme un être mas­culin. Mâle et femelle, il LES créa. Et notre tra­di­tion dit : Eh bien ! Au début, Dieu avait en quelque sorte accolé l’homme et la femme. Les uns dis­ent dos à dos, les autres dis­ent côte à côte. C’est pourquoi, dans le deux­ième chapitre, dit ce même com­men­ta­teur, Dieu sépara la par­tie mâle, Adam, et la par­tie femelle, Ève. Et lorsque Adam regarde Ève, puisque tout d’un coup il se trou­ve face à face et non plus dos à dos ou côte à côte, il dit : “Mais elle, elle est ‘etseme atsamai’”, qui est traduit habituelle­ment par “os de mes os”, mais en fait “sub­stance de ma sub­stance”. Qu’est-ce que cela veut dire ? Cela veut dire qu’il y a une iden­tité par­faite entre l’homme et la femme. Et que donc il ne peut pas y avoir l’un qui soit supérieur à l’autre, qui prenne pos­ses­sion de l’autre. Comme il ne peut pas y avoir au niveau humain l’un qui prenne pos­ses­sion de l’autre, quel qu’il soit. Dieu créa l’Adam, “ha-Adam”, et non pas Adam seul. Nous sommes tous dit notre tra­di­tion rab­binique, nous sommes tous les descen­dants de la même unité humaine, de la même souche humaine. C’est le texte qui le dit. Nous savons que, dans l’évolution de l’humanité, dans l’évolution de la créa­tion, il n’en a pas été totale­ment ain­si. Mais c’est l’idée qui compte. L’idée est que l’humanité. est une et unique. Alors, certes, cer­tains ont la peau un peu jaune, d’autres un peu rouge, d’autres un peu noire, d’autres un peu blanche. Mais, au-delà de cette apparence, nous sommes tous iden­tiques les uns aux autres. Notre corps fonc­tionne exacte­ment de la même façon. Notre esprit illu­mine notre cerveau de la même façon. Nous sommes dif­férents parce que nous sommes nés dans un con­texte géo­graphique, social, cul­turel, religieux par­ti­c­uli­er. Mais au-delà de cette par­tic­u­lar­ité, nous sommes tous sub­stance de la même sub­stance. Il est donc impens­able, religieuse­ment par­lant, si l’on regarde nos textes, il est impens­able de pou­voir être favor­able au traf­ic humain. Il est impos­si­ble d’invoquer nos reli­gions, comme nous le dis­ons dans l’Appel Spir­ituel de Genève, il est impos­si­ble de les invo­quer pour pren­dre pos­ses­sion de l’autre et en faire ce que nous voulons qu’il soit, c’est-à-dire le dégrad­er de son human­ité pour en faire un objet. Nous sommes tous des êtres humains avec un reflet divin, avec une lumière en nous. Et c’est ce reflet divin et cette lumière qui est en nous que nous devons recon­naître en l’autre. Et lorsqu’il en sera ain­si, notre monde sera cer­taine­ment plus lumineux qu’il ne l’est à l’heure actuelle. Les reli­gions doivent être invo­quées pour s’opposer à tout traf­ic humain. Tel est leur mes­sage. Ou plutôt, tel doit être leur mes­sage. Mer­ci.
