Over the past years, pubÂlic attenÂtion has gradÂuÂalÂly turned to the expeÂriÂences of migrants along the preÂcarÂiÂous MediterÂranean routes to Europe. A large numÂber of migrants conÂtinÂue to risk their lives crossÂing the MediterÂranean Sea on the way to Europe, often endurÂing long and perÂilous jourÂneys. A growÂing body of eviÂdence is beginÂning to highÂlight the scale and scope of exploitaÂtion expeÂriÂenced by migrants along these routes, includÂing human trafficking.
This report examÂines migrantsâ vulÂnerÂaÂbilÂiÂty to human trafÂfickÂing and exploitaÂtion by explorÂing risk and proÂtecÂtive facÂtors assoÂciÂatÂed with unsafe migraÂtion, through the sysÂtemÂatÂic eviÂdence colÂlectÂed by IOMâs DisÂplaceÂment TrackÂing Matrix (DTM) operÂaÂtions in 2016. It presents the results from the largest existÂing set of surÂvey data on the vulÂnerÂaÂbilÂiÂty of migrants to abuse, exploitaÂtion and human trafÂfickÂing on the MediterÂranean routes to Europe.
The analyÂsis of the IOM surÂvey data shows that more than one third (37%) of all interÂviewed migrants had a perÂsonÂal expeÂriÂence that indiÂcatÂed the presÂence of human trafÂfickÂing or othÂer exploitaÂtive pracÂtices along the route. SevÂenÂty-three per cent of migrants interÂviewed along the CenÂtral MediterÂranean route preÂsentÂed at least one indiÂcaÂtor of exploitaÂtion, along with 14 per cent of migrants interÂviewed along the EastÂern MediterÂranean route. The analyÂsis in this report goes beyond describÂing the corÂreÂlates of vulÂnerÂaÂbilÂiÂty, and it explores whether potenÂtial preÂdicÂtors can be assoÂciÂatÂed with vulÂnerÂaÂbilÂiÂty when staÂtisÂtiÂcalÂly conÂtrolÂling for the effects of othÂer variÂables. Advanced staÂtisÂtiÂcal analyÂsis (a set of mulÂtiÂlevel logisÂtic regresÂsion modÂels) was underÂtakÂen to idenÂtiÂfy facÂtors that preÂdict migrantsâ vulÂnerÂaÂbilÂiÂty durÂing the journey.
Data derive from interÂviews conÂductÂed over a one-year periÂod with more than 16,000 migrants in sevÂen counÂtries, nameÂly, BulÂgarÂia, Greece, HunÂgary, Italy, SerÂbia, SloveÂnia and the forÂmer Yugoslav RepubÂlic of Macedonia.
