Over 5,400 peoÂple are estiÂmatÂed to have lost their lives on migraÂtoÂry routes around the world in 2015, and the first half of 2016 has only seen the numÂbers increase. The MediterÂranean alone witÂnessed a record numÂber of at least 3,770 deaths in 2015, with numÂbers climbÂing in 2016. The InterÂnaÂtionÂal OrgaÂniÂzaÂtion for MigraÂtion (IOM) estiÂmates that over the last two decades, more than 60,000 migrants have died tryÂing to reach their desÂtiÂnaÂtions, and this only includes deaths for which there is some record. Often occurÂring far from the pubÂlic eye, an unknown numÂber of deaths go unrecorded.
In addiÂtion to the tragedy of loss of life, the majorÂiÂty of those who die are nevÂer idenÂtiÂfied. Their bodÂies may not ever be recovÂered, and even among those whose bodÂies are found, most are buried with at best a numÂber â not a name. Each unidenÂtiÂfied migrant repÂreÂsents a missÂing perÂson for a famÂiÂly. Left withÂout cerÂtainÂty as to the fate of their loved one, famÂiÂlies may search for years or lifeÂtimes, nevÂer fulÂly able to grieve their loss.
This secÂond volÂume in IOMâs series of globÂal reports on migrant deaths, Fatal JourÂneys Vol. 2: IdenÂtiÂfiÂcaÂtion and TracÂing of Dead and MissÂing Migrants, has two main objecÂtives. First, it proÂvides an in-depth analyÂsis of availÂable data on migrant deaths for 2015. Data on the numÂber and proÂfile of dead and missÂing migrants are preÂsentÂed for difÂferÂent regions of the world, drawÂing upon the data colÂlectÂed through IOMâs MissÂing Migrants Project. SecÂond, the report examÂines the chalÂlenges facÂing famÂiÂlies and authorÂiÂties seekÂing to idenÂtiÂfy and trace missÂing migrants. The study comÂpares pracÂtices in difÂferÂent parts of the world, and idenÂtiÂfies a numÂber of innoÂvÂaÂtive meaÂsures that could potenÂtialÂly be repliÂcatÂed elsewhere.
