On 2 DecemÂber 2014 at the CasiÂna Pio IV, headÂquarÂters of the PonÂtifÂiÂcal AcadÂeÂmies of SciÂences and Social SciÂences, Catholic, AngliÂcan, MusÂlim, HinÂdu, BudÂdhist, JewÂish and OrthoÂdox reliÂgious leadÂers signed a Joint DecÂlaÂraÂtion of ReliÂgious LeadÂers Against ModÂern SlavÂery as a pubÂlic stateÂment of their comÂmitÂment to work togethÂer in spirÂiÂtuÂal and pracÂtiÂcal action to eradÂiÂcate this crime against humanÂiÂty and restore digÂniÂty and freeÂdom to its vicÂtims. Before the signÂing of the Joint DecÂlaÂraÂtion each reliÂgious leader described his or her motiÂvaÂtions for adherÂing to this document.
PerÂhaps this was the first time that reliÂgious leadÂers came togethÂer, adding to their interÂreÂliÂgious diaÂlogue, to make a comÂmon stateÂment to affirm that the othÂer is like you, that the othÂer must be recÂogÂnized as such, and that you must treat othÂers as you would have them treat you. You must love your neighÂbour as yourÂself. This means upholdÂing and defendÂing the true idenÂtiÂty of human beings which is comÂproÂmised by the globÂalÂizaÂtion of indifÂferÂence whose gravest conÂseÂquences can be seen in modÂern forms of slavÂery and human trafÂfickÂing â the sysÂtemÂatÂic depriÂvaÂtion of a personâs libÂerÂty, and abuse of his or her body, for examÂple through mutiÂlaÂtion or organ removal, for the purÂposÂes of comÂmerÂcial exploitation.
LookÂing to the future, our comÂmitÂment is an expresÂsion of solÂiÂdarÂiÂty with subÂseÂquent genÂerÂaÂtions to whom we wish to leave a betÂter world. Young peoÂple are with us and ask us for our supÂport to ensure that our genÂerÂaÂtion is the last genÂerÂaÂtion to have such a commitment.
We will conÂtinÂue to invite world reliÂgious leadÂers to unite their efforts by becomÂing sigÂnaÂtoÂries to this Joint Declaration.
