  • 10 000 transplantations illicites par an

CONCLUSION : Nous sommes tous des cannibales

“And how much is your kidney worth? From organ trafficking to the merchandization of the human body”

Presentation of Prof. RAINHORN JEAN-DANIEL

Organ trafficking in a few figures according to the WHO:

10,000 illegal transplants per year
1 billion euros profit per year
A growing market
Transplantation: increasing global demand and donor shortages

Long waiting lists:
In Europe, 90,000 patients are waiting, whereas there have been 10,500 transplants (2012)
More than 200,000 patients are waiting in the world, according to WHO
Demand continues to grow, increasing by about 50% from 2007 to 2016.
In the West, pressure from patients and public opinion, but binding legislation => LOWER COST ALTERNATIVE RESEARCH FOR PATIENTS WITH MEANS.

What to do :

Wait, there are many deaths
Searching family and friends for a donor
BUY A GREFFON => Ethical, legal and financial problem.
Globalisation of biotechnology is underway all over the world, even in countries in transition and emerging countries, doctors are now trained in the best universities to carry out transplants => COST COMPETITION = HIGH QUALITY TECHNICAL PLATEAUX AT COMPETITIVE PRICES. Trained doctors are not educated to participate to this trafficking !

Organ trafficking:

Typical organ donor in the world: 29-year-old male with an annual income of about $480
Typical organ-buying patient: 49-year-old male with an average annual income in excess of $150,000
Donors and patients move around the world to perform transplants => MEDICAL TOURISM organised by a new type of company that systematically ignores all the ethical problems linked to this traffic.
INDIA, donors:
71% below poverty line /majority of women
96% to pay their debts to a third party => 74% are as much or more indebted six years after the sale. The money is collected by the creditor.
Amount received by donor: $1070
79% would not recommend selling a kidney to others.
COLOMBIE :
80% below poverty line/male majority
60% sold to foreigners
Amount received: $1712
<10% had a post-operative visit…
Typical recipient profile: high social level patients who can pay between $50K and $200K for a transplant + treatment management. In the USA some private health insurances encourage their patients to have surgery in emerging countries to save costs.
Typical donor profile: unrelated people with economic needs living in emerging countries with high social inequalities.
Highly profitable traffic for traffickers:
Purchase price of a kidney for the recipient varying from 20 K$ in Egypt (2 K$ received by the seller), to 54 K$ in China (? K$ received by the seller), to 200 K$ in the USA (? K$ received by the seller), 100 K$ in Moldova (2,5 K$ received by the seller), etc..

OF THE MARKETIZATION OF THE BODY INTO PIECES?

Deacralization of the human body: the body has a value, but not a price, giving it a price violates human dignity (Kant)
Respect for the right of everyone to freely choose what he does with his own life or body? EXPLOITATION OF THE BODIES OF THE MOST VULNERABLE FOR THE HEALTH OF THE MOST PRIVILEGED?
The question of social inequalities in health: the health of some at the cost of the health of others…

A second form of slavery: MOTHER CARRIERS

We sell a human being: is it admissible?
A second market for children bought, whose parents no longer want to exist in the USA…

CONCLUSION: We are all cannibals

The purpose of cannibalism is not to eat human flesh, but to appropriate the victim’s strengths… THAT IS THE ISSUE OF ORGAN TRAFFIC.
Governments are going to legislate in a very disparate way around the world, India is in favour, and so on. THE CHALLENGE OF GLOBAL DEHUMANIZATION IS AT OUR DOOR. Transhumanism is the new form.
